Day 4: DMZ, stamps, Dog Soup, Museum,

DMZ
Day 4 would not be as packed as days 2 and 3. 5 hours set aside for driving. It was the day we would visit the DMZ. 2 1/2 hours away from pyongyang. The DMZ or the Demilitarized Zone is basically an area setup by South and North Korea and the UN in 1953 where military operations are forbidden, an area of truce.

The scenery along the way was a bit boring. I did appreciate I was seeing outside of pyongyang. Tours to the North Korea centers in pyongyang, you get to see a lot but mostly stay in PyongYang.  On the way I saw lots of farmers, military personnel.  We had to go through many check points to and from the DMZ although some if not most of them were very easy to go through. the scenes were as follows.
Leaving Pyongyang for the DMZ

First rest stop after 1 hour into the drive.

Arriving at the DMZ. There are lots of formalities at the DMZ as well. The north and south are technically still at war since no treaty was officially signed, you can only go to the DMZ under military escort.

I am not sure what this is saying but everyone was taking pictures of it, so I did too :)
What was signed by the two parties was an armistice agreement. basically agreeing to to stop fighting but no official treaty to end the war. This is the house where it was signed.

The dmz cuts through the 38 parallel North. Above the 38 parallel is North Korea and below it is South Korea. There were no South Korean military the day we were there. I was told the South army withdraw when the North korean military brings guest and the North korean military withdraws when the south korean brings guest.

Heading back we decided to  make a stop at another koryo museum outside of pyongyang. In a nice quiet city with beautiful landscapes, Kaeson City, but not before stopping at a restaurant, where on the menu was two options
1. dog soup
2. ginseng chicken

I placed an order for the latter but it never quite made all the way to my table. My neighbors enjoyed their dog soup it seemed.
